Amsterdam Floating Houses

Amsterdam Floating Houses
They are floating building types whose primary use is for shelter, designed as a residence or converted from a sea vehicle for this purpose. Houseboats are located in areas with stagnant water such as estuaries, lakes, canals, and can also be connected to private shelters such as marinas. Life on Water ‘Floating Houses’, Houses Floating Along the Canal, Houses Floating – Netherlands, Must-See Places.
Fairytale City Giethoorn
Apart from the popular Dutch cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Giethoorn, which is a fairy tale city, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The reason is that it is completely surrounded by water channels. All citiesand villages with a ‘rom’ at the end represent a living space built on water, such as Zaandam and Volendam.
It is possible to see examples of many architectural movements in the Netherlands. Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and modern buildings..
Amstel River Floating Houses
Established as a fishing village on the banks of the Amstel river, Amsterdam canals were dug in the marshy area primarily to control the waters. More than 2500 families live in floating houses on the canals of Amsterdam. The fleet of surplus cargo ships was redesigned and living spaces were provided to the public. There are three different types of houseboats found in Amsterdam. These are old cargo ships made of steel, actually an old ship, with boat houses designed with the details on the deck removed and the life inside in mind, and houseboats designed entirely with the needs and comfort of the dwelling in mind.
Many architects and painters took part in the architecture and decoration of buildings with brick facades along the canal. It is rumored that there were no numbers on the buildings before, and it was understood from the brick color of the buildings. Brick buildings with narrow façades lined up side by side in different architectural trends stretch along the canals, while the floating houses articulated in front of these structures give the city a different identity.
Floating Houses Along the Canal
A standard canal house is four or five storeys with narrow facades. On the ground floor with low ceilings, there are service areas, kitchen and places for servants. The main entrance is on the first floor, which is accessed via a staircase. This floor houses reception areas and lounges for guests, is high ceilinged, ostentatious and adorned with works of art. The second floor houses the bedrooms of the homeowners, and the upper floors the bedrooms of the servants. Stairs are always narrow and steep all over the Netherlands. Since it was not possible to get items from these stairs, items were pulled from the facade by means of hooks that were easily visible at the roof level.
While walking along the canal, it is perfectly normal to wonder about the life inside the floating houses lined up in a single row. While some of the houses do not have a single open window, most of them offer the opportunity to see the life inside, regardless of the floating buses passing by. You can witness an admirable life with someone’s balcony, terrace, flowers etc. in front of it. Living on the water is not a difficult situation for people, on the contrary, it has turned into a pleasant experience.
In cities surrounded by water, life on the water reduces the concerns caused by intense urbanization, while providing a solution for lost ecological values and nature.
From a life-cycle perspective, there is an incomparably less interference with nature compared to normal structures. This is a completely different stance when comparing using the above-water fields with the traditional landfill method.
Tax for houseboats in Netherlands
Since the tax on houseboats is even lower, there are many houseboats on the canals. Since the taxes of the houses on the canal are determined according to the width of the houses facing the canal, the facades of the houses are generally narrow.
In densely populated countries, it is now difficult to find land and people prefer above water. Although this trend started as a necessity in the Netherlands, it is becoming increasingly attractive because it offers many alternatives to the user today.
