The Netherlands built a 140 square meter recycling park from plastic waste collected from the sea and rivers.
The structure, which was built in the Rijnhaven Harbor of the city of Rotterdam, located on the sea coast of the country, can float on water. For the park, which opened in early July, the Recycled Island Foundation established three plastic collection traps on the New Maas River, which runs across the country.
The plastic waste materials collected from the Baltic Sea coast and in the river were sent for recycling, and then processed for the construction of the floating pier. Approximately 1.5 years were spent for the collection of plastic materials and the construction of the park.
In the park, apart from the plastic pier and benches, there are large pots filled with soil. Flowers and grass were planted in these pots. These floating structures were designed by intertwining them in a hexagonal shape.
The recycling park, which attracts great attention of local and foreign tourists, also provides a natural habitat for fish, ducks, shellfish and algae living in the river. There are also traps to collect waste plastics on the shore where the park is established.
Recycling Island Fund, Rotterdam Municipality, WIHM Architecture firm and HEBO Maritime Services worked together to build the park. The aim is to clean and recycle the plastics thrown into the water, to create new living spaces and to inspire environmentally friendly ideas with this project.
