In the first year of the Russia-Ukraine War, Russia surpassed countries such as Iran, Syria, and North Korea to become the world’s most sanctioned country.
More than 11,000 sanctions have been imposed on Russia since the war it started in Ukraine. The USA took the most sanctions against Russia with 1,948 sanctions.
As Russia’s war in Ukraine leaves a year behind, Western countries have imposed numerous sanctions to make Russia pay a heavy economic price.
With the continued attacks, the scope of the sanctions was expanded over time, and sanctions were imposed on Russia in many areas such as finance, energy, transportation, media, technology, automobile, sports, and trade.
According to data from the global sanctions monitoring database Castellum.ai, 11,327 new sanctions were imposed against Russia as of February 22, 2022. The total number of sanctions imposed on Russia since the pre-war has reached 14,022.
With this number, Russia left Iran with 4,268 sanctions, Syria with 2,643 sanctions, and North Korea with 2,133 sanctions.
Belarus with 1,155 sanctions, Venezuela with 651, and Myanmar with 839 sanctions took place in the list of the countries most sanctioned in the world.
THE MOST SANCTIONS CAME FROM THE USA
As of February 22, 2022, the country that took the most sanctions against Russia was the USA with 1,948 sanctions. Switzerland with 1,782 sanctions, Canada with 1,590 sanctions, England with 1,429 sanctions, the European Union (EU) with 1,390 sanctions, France with 1,324 sanctions, Australia with 945 sanctions, and Japan with 919 sanctions followed the USA.
Since that date, 9,117 of the sanctions against Russia have been applied to individuals, while 2,90 have targeted organizations, 96 have targeted ships and 24 have targeted aircraft.
On February 21, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree recognizing the so-called rule of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
In response to Putin’s decision, Western countries began to announce their first sanctions against Russia on February 22, 2022.
On February 24, 2022, Putin announced that they had launched a special military operation in Donbas in eastern Ukraine.
With the official start of the attack on Ukraine, Western countries increased their sanctions against Russia.
