How is the health system in the Netherlands?

When you move to a new country, there are naturally many questions. When it comes to finding a house, settling in, etc., there are dozens of subjects to learn about. The healthcare system is one of the biggest question marks when moving to a new country. Especially if there is a child, the level of anxiety increases even more. In this article, we will try to talk about all the information you need to know about the Dutch healthcare system.

According to the Dutch government, anyone considered to be a resident of the Netherlands is required to have a health insurance. Until the age of 18, the state pays for it, and the requirements for international student status are slightly different.

Dutch Health System in General

The healthcare system is divided into three main branches:

Chronic diseases and long-term treatments : Since the treatment process is longer than normal in cases such as cancer and stroke, your addressee is the institution that provides this service directly. For example, if you need equipment such as a cane or walker permanently, all of these must be covered by your health insurance.

Short-term treatments, simple diseases: In fact, this is the point where you will do almost 95% of the transactions related to the health system. Your GP is the first person you go to when you have a problem. If you need to be treated in a specialty, you can go to a hospital or a specialist doctor with his or her guidance.

Supportive treatments (such as dental, physiotherapy): In the Netherlands, treatments such as dental and physiotherapy are completely transferred to the private sector and are completely excluded from the smallest packages of insurance. However, you can add some of the insurance coverage with the additional packages you will pay monthly.

Benefiting from the Dutch Health System What to Do?

There are a few things you need to do as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands to benefit from the healthcare system .

1. BSN (Burgerservicenummer) almak:

Without BSN, the Dutch version of the ID number, you can hardly do anything in the Netherlands. In order to do this, you need to go to the relevant municipality and register as soon as your address is known. We will be sharing more detailed information about this. In order to get this, you need to give some documents to the municipality, such as your residence permit and your employment contract if you came through work. It may be useful to ask the municipality for the required documents beforehand, as  it may differ from municipality to municipality. After your application, the IND (Immigration Office) will evaluate your application. Your BSN number will be sent to the address you specified by mail. Let us remind you that it may take up to 10 working days. In the meantime, try not to get sick 🙂

2. Bank Account

Again, in many cases where you have to pay money, you need to have an account here. If you came for work, this is also a condition for you to receive your salary. As soon as you receive the BSN, that’s the first thing you need to deal with.

3. Deciding on the Insurance Firm

Although the state requires insurance, all insurance companies are under the control of the private sector. The coverage of the basic packages is the same for all insurances.

You can compare prices on the packages you want at https://www.pricewise.nl/zorgverzekering/zorgverzekering-vergelijken/ or https://vergelijker.net/zorgverzekering/ . However, if you want to benefit from employer support, you usually do not have a choice. You have to work with the company that the employer has specified for you.

You can perform insurance transactions online. The company you choose will send you a card with the necessary information on it in a few days to the address you specify.

3. Registering with a Family Physician

Since you have insurance, the next step is to choose your family doctor from a region close to your home address. You can see the comments about the doctors in the region at https://www.zorgkaartnederland.nl/huisarts and decide accordingly. However, there is one point you should pay attention to. The clinic of the doctor you choose should not be more than a kilometer or two from your home . Otherwise, doctors will turn you away. Unfortunately, many doctors are not available because the number of doctors is limited. Therefore, you may need to call or go to the clinic in person and ask about availability.

If there is availability, you register with the card sent by the insurance. Your eyes are bright! You now have a doctor.

4. Making an Appointment

One of the most important things to know about the Netherlands is to make an appointment for everything. For the doctor, of course, this is quite logical. You can make an appointment by phone or by going to the polyclinic.

Subject of Specialist Doctor

In the Netherlands, you cannot go to the hospital on your own and be examined by a specialist doctor. First of all, you need to go to your family doctor. If the family doctor deems it appropriate, you are referred to the relevant specialist doctor. So you have the flu, your leg hurts, you need to have an operation, always the family doctor. There are exceptions here. Physical therapy and dentist. You can go to both of these without going to the family doctor, and the amount you will pay varies according to the scope of your insurance. We will elaborate on this below.

Insurance Packages and Coverages

Own Risk

We’ll talk about insurance packages below, but there’s one more important thing you need to know. You can consider this as your own risk. What does this mean? It means an expense item other than the monthly premium you will pay to the insurance. If your health expenses exceed this amount at the beginning of the year that year, you have to cover the amount up to an amount that you will determine when choosing a package at the beginning of the year. If your health expenses exceed this amount in the relevant year, all expenses after that point are covered by the insurance. The more you increase this limit, the lower your monthly payments will be. Although the minimum limit is set every year, the figure for 2020 is 385 €. In other words, the expenses after you pay the first 385 € will be covered by the insurance.

Basic Package

Within the scope of the basic package, there are family physicians and follow-up treatments and treatments for chronic diseases. The choice you need to make for the basic package is to decide whether you want to go to the partner centers. If you say that I can go to any hospital I want, your monthly payment will increase a little more.

Additional Packages

Dental: Dental services have been completely transferred to the private sector and are not covered by the basic package. You can go to a dentist of your choice at https://www.zorgkaartnederland.nl/tandarts , register and continue your treatment here. As we mentioned above, you do not need to go to the family doctor for the dentist. With the packages you will add to your insurance coverage, you can say that 75 or 100% of the annual costs ranging from 250 to 1000 € will be covered by the insurance. Of course, keep in mind that as the coverage rate and amount increase, your monthly payments increase at the same rate.

Important note: Many dentists use an intermediary firm for payment. You have to pay the part that the insurance does not cover to that intermediary company. When registering with the dentist, be sure to learn how to make these payments. Because we did not know this, we went to an appointment once and could not get service because the payment was not made. keep in mind.

Physiotherapy (Physical Therapy): Physiotherapy is one of the most important pillars of the health system. For orthopedic problems, you can see a physiotherapist directly before your family doctor. If you cannot find a solution to your problem with physiotherapy treatment, your family doctor comes into play here. With the written recommendation of the therapist, you can go to the family doctor and request to see a specialist doctor. It is possible to choose packages with unlimited sessions of 6 times a year for this treatment method, which is also not covered by the basic package.

Eye: When you have a problem with your vision, it is enough to go directly to the eyeglasses retailer instead of the doctor. The optician there will take the measurements and give you the right glasses directly. The compensation for this service is still not included in the basic scope. However, there are packages available to cover costs from 100 to 200 € per year. A specialist ophthalmologist is considered as the last solution in case of serious eye problems.

Overseas Coverage

The Netherlands has health agreements with many countries. If you experience a health problem while traveling and need to go to the hospital, the insurance coverage varies from country to country. Therefore, before traveling, it is useful to get detailed information from your insurance company.

You can also take advantage of the extra packages offered by insurance companies to increase coverage. Remember. Even if your insurance covers it, if your Own Risk limit is not reached, it will be deducted from there first and you will have to pay.

Alternative Treatments

There are also additional packages for alternative treatment methods such as acupuncture. You can add costs from 200 to 700 € per year in your package.

Student Insurance

International students are not required to have insurance. Because they are not seen as resident individuals. However, in order for them to benefit from the health system while they are here, they must have private health insurance. It is not possible to take out standard Dutch insurance because you do not have a residence.

If you start working in any job besides being a student, you are directly covered by the insurance due to residence. Even works based on volunteerism are evaluated within this scope. However, since your income will be low, it is possible to receive insurance assistance.

Health Insurance Assistance

If your annual income is less than €30,481 for singles, €38,945 for partners and less than €116,613 (for 147,459 partners), you can receive assistance.

For example, a 33-year-old can receive an insurance benefit of 63 € per month with an annual income of 25,000 €. Here is the calculation link .

Insurance for Children

All children up to the age of 18 must have insurance, but the premium is not paid until they turn 18. If you have a child in the Netherlands, you must insure your child within 4 months of birth. Persons over the age of 18 must also switch to the premium payment system within 1 month. Otherwise, there is a penalty.

Insurance Company Change

If you are not satisfied with the current insurance company, you can change companies. But you can do this once a year. Every year in November, insurance companies send out their new policies. You can switch to another insurance company until January 1st.

More than 800 film producers and actors in the Netherlands call for sanctions against Israel

More than eight hundred well-known names from the cinema world in the Netherlands called on the interim government to impose economic and political sanctions on Israel.

More than eight hundred Dutch filmmakers and actors called on the interim government to “impose sanctions on Israel within the European framework.” The letter distributed on the social media platform Instagram also includes the signatures of players such as Carice van Houten, Sanne Vogel and Georgina Verbaan.

“We condemn Hamas’ attack, the constant hostage-taking that caused the loss of life of many Israeli civilians,” the letter said, adding: “We are deeply concerned about the humanitarian disaster currently taking place in Gaza. “More than 6,000 bombs dropped by Israel on Gaza since October 7 have killed thousands of Palestinians and threatened to displace more than a million people,” the letter said. “Meanwhile, the Israeli media is calling for the “destruction” of Gaza. “Israel is threatening to bomb even more heavily, and a ground attack seems imminent.” It emphasizes that concerns about the situation in Gaza are increasing.

In the letter, the signatories emphasized that unconditional support from the Netherlands and a call for a “break in war” were not enough and asked: “What will the government do while the international law of war is being violated and Israel is intensifying its military campaign?” he asks the question.

The letter concludes as follows: We, the undersigned filmmakers, actors and film professionals, reject violence against all civilians, regardless of their identity. “Therefore, we request the government to put pressure on the European Commission to impose economic and political sanctions on Israel within the European framework, if Israel does not immediately declare a ceasefire and guarantee humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

There will also be an increase in the consumption tax on soft drinks in the Netherlands

There will also be an increase in the consumption tax on soft drinks in the Netherlands

Next year, the consumption tax on soft drinks will be increased. As of January 1, prices will increase by an average of 26 cents.

The government aims to increase the excise tax on soft drinks as of January 1, 2024, and to eliminate the excise tax on mineral water from 2024. Therefore, not only the price of beverages such as cola and fruit juice, but also the prices of plant-based beverages such as oat milk and almond milk, which are used as alternatives to milk, will increase by an average of 26 cents per liter.

According to the information on the Rijksoverheid website, starting from next year, lemonade (including syrup), fruit juices, vegetable juices, mineral water, non-alcoholic beer, low-alcohol beer containing 0.5% or less alcohol, and other beverages containing a maximum of 1.2% alcohol will be limited to 100% alcohol. The price of a liter will increase from 17.30 euros to 26.13 euros.

The purpose of the consumption tax that the government will impose on soft drinks, popularly known as the “lemonade tax”, is to direct people to make healthier choices. In addition, to increase the income from taxes to the state coffers. It is stated that with the new consumption tax, 300 million euros will be generated for the state coffers.

There are also those who oppose the “lemonade tax”
The price hike for plant-based products, which are used by vegetarians and vegans because they think they are better for their health, has been criticized by some circles. The petition launched by a university student opposing this tax has already been signed by 40 thousand people.

College student Misty Mason thinks this isn’t fair. Stating that it is unfair to impose higher taxes on milk alternatives, Mason points out that cow’s milk and chocolate milk are exempt from this tax.

Oatly, the maker of oat milk, supports the petition and even started a campaign. In many places in Amsterdam, there is a photo of a packet of oat milk with a QR code leading to the petition and the words: “This is not lemonade, the government says so.” He had written billboards put up.

The petition is also supported by associations and institutions that promote plant-based nutrition.

Van Ooijen: “It is not possible to exempt these products”
State Secretary for Health Maarten van Ooijen acknowledged in a statement to Trouw that the increase in the price of oat milk had an ‘inadvertent, undesirable and even unreasonable effect’, but said he wanted to continue implementing the tax increase for now. According to Van Ooijen, it is technically not possible to put milk drinks in a separate category and therefore exempt them from tax increases.

In the European Union, 43.8 percent of the population lives in an owner-occupied residence, free of mortgages or mortgages. This rate is over 60 percent in 10 EU member countries. The highest debt-free home ownership rate is in Romania with 93.9 percent, while Croatia has 82.8 percent.BulgariaIt follows Romania with 82.6 percent.

“The housing crisis is deepening”

In his statement to AA correspondent, Cushman & Wakefield I TR International Chairman of the Board of Directors, Tuğra Gönden, noted that housing costs in metropolitan cities in EU countries, generally in central locations, are quite high.

Stating that the population density is increasing year by year in the metropolitan cities of high-income countries, Gönden said, “The limited housing and land supply and the fact that more people want to live in urban areas causes housing prices to increase. As a result, this situation is also reflected in the housing ownership rates and people rent houses instead of buying houses.” “It causes them to turn to housing. Moreover, this increase in demand causes the prices of both sale and rental housing to increase, causing this vicious circle to continue.” he said.

Emphasizing that the housing crisis is deepening in developed European countries, Gönden made the following evaluations:

“The housing crisis in Germany is deepening, and the arrival of immigrants makes this situation even more complicated. Especially in one of the big citiesBerlinThis problem is felt more in Germany’s major metropolises such as. Due to increasing construction costs, rising interest rates and the influx of refugees, the housing deficit in the country has reached its highest level in the last 20 years. Ukraine-Russia The demand of Ukrainians who came to Germany after the war caused the need for an additional 200 thousand houses. The increases in rental prices caused great public reaction, and the government organized a referendum to find a solution to this problem. As a result of the referendum, 56.4 percent voted yes for the expropriation of more than 240 thousand houses.

Similar housing crisis problems are experienced in France. Rental expenses constitute a large part of the monthly expenses of French households. Capital city Paris  increase in housing prices in central regions such as Turkey, etc., drives those looking for housing away from city centers and also prolongs the process of finding rental housing. According to the report of the Abbe Pierre Foundation, by 2022, 4.15 million people in France face housing problems or live in inhumane conditions. Following these housing supply problems, the French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced that it plans to provide easier access to loans and offer loan opportunities with 0 interest by collaborating with banks to ensure that citizens have easier access to housing in regions where there is a housing shortage.

van gogh stolen

Dutch art detective Arthur Brand, known as the ‘Indiana Jones’ of the art world, found Van Gogh’s painting stolen from the museum three and a half years ago.

A painting by Dutch painter Van Gogh, stolen from a museum three and a half years ago during the coronavirus outbreak, was found.

Art detective Arthur Brand said: “Confirming that the painting was the stolen Van Gogh was one of the best moments of my life.”

Richard Bronswijk from the art crimes unit of the Dutch police said, “Arthur Brand solved this problem in cooperation with the Dutch police. The painting is absolutely real, there is no doubt about it.”

Detective Brand received the lost painting “Parsonage Garden in Nuenen” dated 1884 at a house in Amsterdam.

The painting, estimated to be worth three to six million Euros, was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum on March 30, 2020.

In the video published by the Dutch police shortly after the robbery, it is seen that a thief broke the glass door of the museum near Amsterdam at midnight and ran away with the painting hidden under his arm.

‘The Indiana Jones of the art world’

Dubbed the ‘Indiana Jones of the art world’, Brand made a name for himself by retrieving stolen works of art, including bronze statues of “Hitler’s Horses”, a Picasso painting and a ring belonging to Oscar Wilde.

The whereabouts of the Van Gogh painting were unknown until two weeks ago. However, one person called the detective and said he wanted to return the painting.

Brand noted that an unidentified man delivered the painting to him in a blue IKEA bag and a pillowcase.

A video the detective released shows him “opening the painting in the living room and being stunned by the discovery.”

Thief sentenced to 8 years in prison

In April 2021, police arrested a man identified by Dutch media as Nils M. on charges of theft. Nils M. was later sentenced to eight years in prison.

Nils M. was also found guilty of stealing Frans Hals’s “Two laughing children” in another robbery.

Brand said that a few months after the theft, he learned from a source in the criminal world who had bought the Van Gogh painting from Nils M.

The art detective said the man is currently in prison on a separate case involving the import and export of cocaine. Dutch media announced that this person was Peter Roy K., who was sentenced to 12 years in prison, and that he asked for a reduction in his sentence by using the painting as collateral. Confirming the identity of Peter Roy K., Brand noted that “there will be no agreement to reduce the sentence.”

Hz. A court in the Netherlands held a trial in absentia against former cricketer Latif, who placed a 21 thousand euro bounty on Wilders’ head for organizing a cartoon contest on the subject of Muhammad.

In its decision on Monday, the Hague District Court said, “The court ruled that the suspect’s statements should be considered as an attempt to incite, incite and threaten murder. The words used by the suspect are clear: He promises a significant amount of money to perform a certain action and kill Wilders.” he said.
